The Gambling Commission has today released further data showing the effect of the Covid-19 lockdown on gambling behaviour.

The data shows the two months of full lockdown in April and May and was gathered from the largest online operators and the YouGov Covid-19 tracker. It constructs on data published by the Commission on 12 May and more data released by the Commission on 12 June with the Commission releasing updated assistance to operators in May which included the requirement for enhanced affordability checks, the prevention of reverse withdrawals and restrictions on benefit offers.

The newest data is constant with the very first 2 sets and also highlights a boost in real-event betting and sports betting, partly due to the return, in May, of top-flight football through the German Bundesliga.

Overall involvement [1] has decreased but some engaged players are investing more money and time on certain items. Overall typical spend per active client [4] increased by 17% in May, compared to April.

A crucial element of the guidance released to operators in May was the guideline to prevent reverse withdrawal choices from June onwards [2] The information gathered throughout May showed significant use of operator reverse withdrawal functions, suggesting that the Commission's updated assistance was both appropriate and prompt, and will ensure customers are much better secured from damage during the lockdown period.

Having assessed the ramifications, the Commission will now continue to track and examine danger by:

- evaluating the impact of the strengthened assistance provided to operators

- gathering and releasing the information being collected

- working with the market as land-based facilities continue to open

- where proof identifies extra dangers dealt with by consumers, taking more action to protect customers.

The information was taken from YouGov's Covid-19 tracker [3], which covers a representative sample of circa 2,000 adults in Great Britain each week, and from submissions of the greatest operators, covering approximately 80% of the entire online betting market. [4]

The complete report on Covid-19-related data is offered on the Gambling Commission's website.
